Auto vs. Pedestrian

That is what the police report would have read.

Today was a decent day and almost my last. This afternoon during my daily walk, I approached the intersection of 20th & JFK. The signal for pedestrian traffic flashed orange as the timer winked 8, 7, 6. I picked up my pace and hustled across the four-lane street before the light changed to the color of my hair.

My feet shuffled across the asphalt, though my mind was elsewhere. I frowned as I remembered the ophthalmologist had not yet called me to schedule my appointment. What the hell?! Didn’t they realize I, Matt Sullivan, am the most important patient in their practice??!! (N.B.-The doctor still has not called. I might have to re-evaluate this “Don’t You Know Who I Am?” attitude.)

I don’t know where my vision was focused before I saw the black Nissan bearing down on me. But this was not like a scene in the movies. There was no blaring horn. Time did not grind to a halt as I slammed on the breaks of my Asics. The sedan blew the light and hurtled by within a few feet of my kicks. “Good Christ!”

I caught my breath and crossed 20th Street. I walked by a dude, who appeared to be about my age, with his brows raised as we exchanged glances. His look said, “Holy shit, bro. That was a close.”
